In English the word arpillera means burlap; in Spanish this word came to mean the cloth of resistance. Arpilleras became the voices for people who had been silenced by their military rulers. They often contained symbols that challenged authority. Notice the black electricity lines in this arpillera. These lines always passed high overhead of most shantytowns, never providing electricity to the hundreds of people living below. Here we see illegal taps on the power lines, bringing electricity to every single house.
